Marketing Firms Over the Years

Within the last twenty years, something amazing has happened. As the Internet grew and as access to online sources became more mainstream, the concept of globalization became more of a reality. Many everyday tasks have changed, for better or worse. Fifteen years ago you could not purchase groceries from a computer and have them delivered to your house. Because of these developments, the field of marketing has been greatly affected. Over the last several years, marketers have come to utilize a new form of mass communication known as social media.

So, what is social media? The easiest way to define it is by a breakdown of the term. "Media" is a tool to communicate information (e.g. a news program on television) and "social" meaning interaction. In short, it is ways to communicate ideas and interact with one another through the use of the Internet. It comes in so many forms that it would be impossible for one to list them all, but some of the better examples of social media would be Facebook (social networking), YouTube (video sharing), and Wikipedia (online encyclopedia). All of these platforms provide the everyday person to communicate information and interact with others.

Marketers have taken note of the rise of these social media platforms. In a world where it is increasingly difficult for people, especially the college level, to interact casually, social media has helped friends and family keep in touch. Marketers are increasingly using social media to expand their advertising to previously unreachable markets in the hopes of gaining potential customers. Whether it is through a company following people on Twitter, posting advertisements on Facebook or keeping a blog on their specific areas of expertise, they want to catch the eye of the more online savvy customers.

With the rise of social media marketing tactics used by companies has also brought about the rise of marketing firms that specialize in social media and online advertising. In the simplest of explanations, it is the job of these firms to get people to see their client's online work. They utilize a variety of tactics to drive up "traffic" or views in favor of their client's product or services. This is especially useful for companies that the general public have little knowledge of. Through the use of social media, these marketing firms hope for customers to see these company names and consider looking further into them.

As the rise of the Internet has brought us closer together without actually having to leave our homes, companies have had to rethink their marketing plans. Using social media, companies and marketing firms intend to bring their or their client's products and services to a larger pool of potential customers. Through the use of Facebook, YouTube, e.t.c, advertising has been able to impact a greater amount of people on a more personal level.
